Sigmund Freud--The Id, Superego & The Unconscious
Freud really kicked off psychoanalysis and depth psychology. Jung then picked up the ball and ran it a whole lot farther, broader, and deeper. It worked for me - I bought Jung's collected works when I was 18 years old and I was off and running.
Freud and Jung gave us a structure for the human mind and unconscious: the conscious and unconscious minds, the ego, the id, the superego. They elaborated the importance of dreams, even though they headed in different directions with their interpretations: Freud more focused on sexuality and Jung on the collective unconscious and archetypes and symbols. MAN & HIS SYMBOLS is a great introduction to Jung's work and often in the remainders section at book stores.
This toy is a paean to Freud's great explorations and all that followed. Take him out of the package and keep him nearby when you are conducting psychotherapy - he may give you pointers!
The Superego is probably the most prickly of Freud's inventions. See our button: THE SUPER-EGO IS A CRUEL REPLACEMENT FOR GOD. Also, our toy NUNZILLA is an example of the superego gone wild and putting immense strictures on life to the point where some feel suffocated by rules, guilt and shame.
Regardless, Freud got us thinking about the unconscious and subconscious minds. One of Jung’s disciples, Erich Neumann from israel, took it further. He reasoned a new ethic that required us to not only acknowledge the unconscious but take responsibility for it. From Neumann’s point of view, un-worked subconscious issues become a haven for those will seek to do ill and control and masses. Neumann also railed against what I would call “the truthful lie.” We typically speak of our ego state when someone asks how we are - the unconscious is left out of the equation. The unconscious gets taken on when going through things like a protracted psychoanalysis or a 12-step program where one is required to take inventory of what we had previously ignored and the damage that resulted from it. Neumann felt that adopting the new ethic was the only way to avoid societal self-destruction in the long run. So far we’re not doing very well with the challenge he set forth for us!
