In Memoriam:
Robert (Bobby) Hickman.
My friend, Bobby Hickman first appeared in my life when he gave the primary address at the LOOKING FOR TROUBLE Conference at the Andrew-Riverside Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, MN on November 3-5, 1995. I still remember his comments about the American Dream: We’re not in the American Dream, we’re not dreaming. We’re awake and living lives outside that dream. He discussed the importance of waking from that dream in order to do the hard work to bring the American Dream’s promises to reality.
From that time onwards, we were friends and began working together addressing community issues. Bobby carried a bag of my toys and the Web & Hoberman with him everywhere, using it to speak to young people in the community & build understanding. He invited me to join him at the City, Inc. to work directly with youth & brought me into the community in a variety of ways. When he died, I was privileged to speak at his funeral, a powerful event with many distinguished community leaders. For the last couple years of his life, he wore one of my DO NOT BE A NOT SEE buttons every day, eager to explain when people asked him about it.
